Our Education Faculty, which has an established 51-year-old history, started its education and training under the name ‘Burdur Female Teachers’ Training High School’ in 1965-1966 school year; it was converted to a two-year Education Institute in 1977-1978 school year. It was attached to Akdeniz University with a statutory decree Nr 41 dated July 20, 1982, and was named Education High School. The study period was increased to four years effective from 1989-1990 school year. It then took the name Burdur Education Faculty and was connected to Suleyman Demirel University, which was founded with the law Nr 3837.

Our faculty, which only provided education in the division of primary education until 1993, launched music education and fine arts education programs in 1989-1990 school year, and has, since then, been accepting students into these programs with special talent exams.

In 1995-1996 school year, besides the existing programs, Turkish Language and Literature education and Social Sciences Education (Division of History Education, Division of Geography Education) and Division of Preschool Education, effective from 1998-1998 school year, started their teaching activities.

Under the Council of Higher Education/ the World Bank national education development project, the departments and divisions of our faculty were restructured in the spring term of 1997-1998 school year within the framework of the restructuring of the education faculties. Department of Computer and Instructional Technologies education (CITE) and Department of Teaching Elementary Mathematics were launched in 2005-2006 school year. The department of Guidance and Psychological Counselling started its undergraduate education in 2009-2010 school year.

Pre-service teachers have, in our faculty, been trained in the following departments: Computer and Instructional Technologies Education, Elementary Science Education, Music Education, Pre-school Education, Guidance and Psychological Counselling, Fine Arts Education, Elementary School Education, Social Sciences Education, Turkish Language Education, English Language Teaching. The faculty currently has 3035 teacher candidates, who are trained by our teaching staff for the teaching profession. Additionally, the faculty has students enrolled at the departments of Curriculum and Instruction; Educational Administration, Supervision, Planning and Economics, Educational Measurement and Evaluation, and Mental Disabilities Education, and it continues to be properly involved in teaching and research activities.

Our faculty offers education-training-research and development activities at local, national and international levels, with its 104 academic staff, including 5 full professors, 27 associate professors, 38 assistant professors, 17 lecturers, 15 research assistants and 2 instructors, and 14 administrative staff.

To that effect, the vision of our faculty is to train teachers who are respectful of democratic and ethical values; sensitive to the issues surrounding their immediate environment, home country and the world; literate in terms of scientific and technological aspects; aware of the responsibility of educating new generations; capable of bettering themselves according to the requirements of the age; open to change and development; perceiving knowledge as a lifestyle; self-confident; able to follow and apply international advances; and is to be the leading one in this field. Moreover, it seeks to promote national and international cooperation in the domain of education, train professional educators that our country needs, and raise the quality of the curriculum with the contributions of national and international groups, parties and researchers.

Our mission is to serve humanity by training individuals who can inquire, question, capitalize, preserve cultural values, and are equipped with high scientific and technological literacy in addition to contributing to the development of the region and the country. Our goal is accordingly to get teacher candidates to be trained as individuals who appreciate national, moral, humanitarian, spiritual and cultural values of our country; keep public interests above own personal interests; are filled with the love of the family, the nation and country; know their duties and responsibilities to the Republic of Turkey and convert them into behaviours; have a broad world perspective; respect human rights; are sound and balanced in terms of body, mind, spirit, moral and emotions; can contribute to the development of the country and meet its needs within the scope of their interests and abilities; have the required professional skills, knowledge and behaviours as well as general knowledge.
